Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and continuing through the early twentieth century it became popular to build premium homes based on European architectural styles originally developed before the eighteenth century. The most popular original architectural styles that were built in Wisconsin as “revivals” include Gothic, Greek, Elizabethan, Tudor, French Second Empire, French Baroque and Italianate. Technically, when these styles appear in America they are ‘Revivals’. Today people sometimes include ‘Revival’ and sometimes not, e.g., Gothic or Gothic Revival, Elizabethan or Elizabethan Revival both names describe the same styles.
