A trench filled with washed stone and usually containing a perforated pipe. Water entering the drain will enter the pipe and be carried away. A French drain may be lined, as shown in this picture to better capture water. It may be exposed at its top or buried. Drain tile is placed in a French drain around the base of a home’s foundation to capture water and channel it away from the basement. French drains have a wide variety of applications when water run-off or percolation into the ground needs to be managed.
