Federal style homes differ from Georgian Colonials, their predecessor, in their use of plainer surfaces. Over time the two styles have melded into a spectrum from pure Georgian to pure Federal. Federal style homes were originally built between 1780 and 1830. In Wisconsin most homes of this style were built after the middle of the nineteenth century. Since homes of this style were built after the original period when they became popular they are technically revivals.
