At only 1.1 square miles, West Milwaukee is the smallest community in Milwaukee County. With its central location, residents here are close to everything in Milwaukee County. West Milwaukee has its own police department, but contracts with Milwaukee for fire and emergency medical services. It lives in the shadow of West Allis and the two communities share a joint school district. Known for its heavy industry, West Milwaukee also enjoys a newer retail district along S. 43rd Street (Miller Park Way) between National Avenue and Lincoln Avenue. It was built on land that had been cleared to become the right of way for an expressway connecting the Stadium Interchange south to I-43. But when Milwaukee stopped any further development of expressways, this land sat vacant for years until the area was redeveloped. Residential dwellings are for the most part a mix of small single family homes and duplexes. The residential area is located along the northern part of town south of National Avenue.
